As Salvatore Guardala steps down as National Board Member and Chair of the Property Industry Foundation Queensland Board of Advisors, we take a moment to reflect on four remarkable years of leadership, vision, and life-changing impact.

When Sal first joined the Foundation, the Queensland chapter was finding its feet — making small but meaningful contributions to addressing youth homelessness. Under his stewardship, that quietly changed. Today, the Foundation has delivered 16 bedrooms for young people in need in Queensland, with a pipeline of nearly 58 more on the way in the years ahead. That growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of the kind of leadership Sal brought to every room he walked into — the kind that rallies people around a common cause and turns goodwill into action.

“I always ask, why do we have youth homelessness out there? For me, it’s changing the why to how do we actually make a difference now. And that’s been the big change for me.”

Sal’s motivation was never abstract. It was rooted in his own story — entering the property industry at a young age, guided by a mentor who believed in him, and never forgetting what that kind of support meant. That personal experience shaped his conviction that the property and construction community had both the resources and the responsibility to do something meaningful.

And they did. By bringing together property professionals, construction partners, donors, and board members, Sal helped the Foundation punch well above its weight in Queensland — not just financially, but in terms of the genuine human connections forged along the way.

One moment stands out above the rest. At a Foundation event, Sal found himself in conversation with a young man he didn’t recognise straight away. It turned out the young man had lived in Haven House Kingaroy. He spoke about having his own bedroom for the first time, a safe place to call home, and — most importantly — hope. When they spoke again later, that same young man had a job, was building a career, and was looking to the future.

“Changing someone’s life like that doesn’t happen too often, and that will always stay with me. It is something that the Property Industry Foundation is very, very good at doing.”

It’s a story that captures everything the Foundation stands for, and everything Sal has championed during his time as National Board Member and Chair of the Queensland Board of Advisors.

“Sal has made an outstanding contribution to Queensland during his tenure as Chair. His leadership, insight, and commitment to our mission has helped strengthen the organisation and position to continue its impact. On behalf the Foundation, I sincerely thank him for his dedication, leadership and friendship for the last four years.”

As he passes the baton to the incoming Chair, Sal leaves behind more than a pipeline of bedrooms. He leaves a culture of purpose, a stronger network of partners, and a Queensland chapter that now has the momentum to dream bigger. His hope — and ours — is that the work continues, that the conversations keep happening, and that one day, youth homelessness in Australia becomes a problem of the past.

Thank you, Sal. For your time, your heart, and for always believing that what we do here truly changes lives.
