Getting to know the residents of our Haven Houses …
In late 2024, frightened and desperate mum Jane* and her two children arrived at Haven House Ruth (SHINE Refuge) on the Sunshine Coast, having been forced to relocate to a new area to escape long-term domestic violence. The traumatised young family found a safe and welcoming home and support from the Foundation’s Frontline Partner, the Salvation Army and their specialist team.
Although recovery is a long and complex journey for Jane and her children, they have made significant steps towards a happier and more secure future. Jane has completed safety planning to prevent further risk of family violence, and the family are engaged in ongoing mental health support to address lifelong trauma.

With a goal to gain financial independence, Jane is applying for Australian Permanent Residency and exploring local employment opportunities. Her children have settled into a beautiful school community and are catching up on missed education.
“Jane frequently expresses gratitude to SCFV (Salvation Army Queensland Family Violence Services) for the safety, security, and stability she now feels for herself and her children at Haven House Ruth (SHINE Refuge),” says the Salvation Army.
