Jim Dolkas

You might have seen Jim contributing at a Haven House Committee meeting, trekking 30kms through the darkness at Victoria’s Hike the Night fundraiser or offering his expertise as an advisor on building projects … his can-do attitude and commitment to volunteering is a huge asset to the Foundation. Jim talks about why he supports the Property Industry Foundation.

What inspired you to start volunteering with the Foundation?

Throughout my career in property, I have always supported various causes and given my time volunteering. I was drawn to the Property Industry Foundation’s focus on youth homelessness as I reflected on my early days starting out and the benefit that a stable home and family life provided, giving me the confidence required to step out into the ‘real’ world. I have been involved since 2021, serving on the Haven House Committee, acting as an advisor on a Salvation Army project in Frankston and participating in various fundraisers.

What impact do you think your volunteering has had – on young people and on yourself?

You can see first-hand the impact when you visit the properties the Foundation has been able to facilitate and speak to some of the young people there who are given a supportive environment from which to rebuild their lives. Personally, it’s the satisfaction you get seeing what the practical outcome of a ‘roof over one’s head’ provides to a vulnerable young person. I know it’s a cliche’ but young people are our future and everyone should have a chance at reaching their potential.

What are some of the biggest misconceptions the public has about homelessness?

That homeless people are no-hopers with little/no ambition. The reality is something very different as homelessness does not discriminate and affects people from all walks of life.

What’s one moment volunteering with the Foundation that has stayed with you?

Most recently, I participated in the Hike the Night event where 22 individuals raised over $130k that will go directly to helping deliver much needed support. It was an amazing experience and the comradery amongst the group, developed during the night, will have a lasting legacy.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering for the Foundation?

Go for it! It’s a truly rewarding experience and an opportunity to build lasting relationships.

What can everyday people do to make a difference to youth homelessness?

Be kind and don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Supporting initiatives like those of the Foundation is a very simple way of making a difference.

If you could change one thing about housing for young people in Australia, what would it be?

Make sure that no young person is without a place to call home.

There are so many ways to get involved with volunteering at the Foundation. Join a committee, get hands on at a working bee or wrapping night, or sign up to a fundraising event!
