Significant renovations and upgrades to Redfern’s Jarjum College are complete and ready for indigenous students and their support staff to enjoy.

Last week marked a significant milestone as the Property Industry Foundation and its project partners completed major upgrades and renovations to Redfern’s Jarjum College, Sydney. Jarjum educates urban Aboriginal children who are not participating or coping in mainstream primary schools because of their personal circumstances.

This transformative and collaborative project has created a safe and nurturing environment for Jarjum’s students and staff, with critical upgrades to the college’s facilities. These included the installation of a safety mesh along the stairwell and all balconies and a security double front door to bolster the school’s security. A complete renovation of the art room, including new supplies, will help foster creativity and connection.

The project also saw the installation of a new kitchen and dining room, offering a welcoming communal space for students to share meals. Sinks were added to encourage good hygiene practices and the calm room was renovated to provide a serene space for students needing a quiet place to decompress and manage stress. Finally, air conditioning was installed, ensuring classrooms maintain comfortable temperatures year-round.

These upgrades would not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of our valued industry partners. Tim Christie from Taylor Construction, Renn Holland from Tensile, Hy Te from Interspace, Ian Tsui, Gillian Donaldson, and the team from Architectus played pivotal roles in bringing this vision to life. We also extend our gratitude to James Patterson and Sally Edvarsden from Knight Frank, as well as Deepak Serchan and Paul Rosenberg from ALD Corporate, whose support was instrumental in the success of this project.

“Not only do they look great, but they are really welcoming to our community and allow us to cater to all the needs of our students”

Katherine Zerounian, Principal at Jarjum College

The Jarjum College project highlights the effectiveness of collaboration from the property and construction industry in the fight against youth homelessness and in creating environments where young people can thrive.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our partners for their continued support – offering invaluable pro bono skills and services, building materials, funding, and more. Together, we are making a difference, one project at a time, ensuring that every child, regardless of their life circumstances, can learn, grow, and thrive in a safe and supportive environment.
