Getting to know the residents of our Haven Houses …
Arriving at Haven House Sylvania in Sydney’s south in early 2025, *Teya was initially apprehensive about what to expect. “When I first arrived, I was a bit nervous and anxious about how I’d like the experience, and how I would feel living by myself which is all new to me.”
Caretakers Cottage operates the shared residence, providing specialised support and independent living skills for young people ageing out of the Out of Home Care Sector. “Our Sylvania program is essentially a large share house in which six young people reside with the support of caseworkers and some additional youthwork support in the evenings to develop living skills,” says Laurie Matthews, CEO Caretakers Cottage.

Teya soon found herself settling into Haven House Sylvania’s routines, discovering a welcoming and compassionate community. “The reassurance and support from the Caretakers Cottage workers have given me confidence and courage,” says Teya, “along with the beautiful rooms and bathrooms which make me feel more at home.”

Refurbished in 2024, Haven House Sylvania has two additional bedrooms and a new bathroom. It’s a bright and modern home where vulnerable young people can find their footing and recover from trauma if needed. “From the comfort of my room, I feel safe and very grateful to have this opportunity in my hands,” says Teya. “The lamps on the ceilings are so beautiful and so are the tiles in the hallway. I love the sensor lighting since I’m scared of the dark.”
Being able to develop trust and life skills in a safe space will have a lasting impact on Teya, as she plans for an independent future. “I just wanted to express how grateful and happy I am to be living in such a beautiful home with caring and loving workers. This opportunity has helped me a lot … with the bonus of flexing how beautiful the house I live in is!”
