Getting to know the residents of our Haven Houses…
It’s hard to imagine a tougher start to life than Marie’s. Devastated by repeated sexual assault and suffering complex mental health issues, she felt abandoned and abused by those that were supposed to care for her – facing an uncertain and bleak future. Finding her way to BABI Youth & Family Services in Queensland, Marie was finally able to escape a dangerous home life and heal from significant trauma.
BABI is a Foundation charity beneficiary in Queensland, with the goal of providing hands-on, practical support to homeless and at-risk young people as they work towards more secure accommodation, education and employment goals.
”“Marie’s journey highlights the impact of holistic, tailored support in empowering
BABI Family & Youth Services
young people to regain stability and independence,”
Marie was given a home for 12 months in BABI’s medium term housing, accessing regular psychology and sexual assault support. With encouragement and small steps, Marie took part in BABI’s ‘Get Set for Work’ program and began to feel more confident about finding a steady job to support herself.
With ongoing guidance from her case worker and a strong network in place, Marie made the important step of moving into a private shared rental. A true survivor, Marie is setting herself up for a happy and successful adult life – showing up for regular counselling sessions and continuing to see big improvements in her mental health and wellbeing.
