A big green thumbs up to our pro bono supporters from Plantmark Wholesale Nurseries. Their horticulture experts oversee our inviting Haven House gardens; selecting easy care plants and trees to enhance each project, including the recent Haven House Clayton in Victoria. We talked to Kirk Bryant, Plantmark Projects and Tenders Manager.

Why does Plantmark offer garden support to the Property Industry Foundation?

Plantmark have been associated with the Property Industry Foundation for many years, providing greenlife for new home construction projects. With over 35 years of experience, providing practical advice for the provision of plants and trees for any project is what we excel at and do on a daily basis. We ensure the plant palette selected for each home provides a safe and effective landscape, are low maintenance and blend in with the existing environment to establish a long-term garden to be appreciated and enjoyed year-round.

How does having a lovely, easy-care garden support the wellbeing of residents?

Garden spaces offer a sense of calm and soften the built environment, providing shade, security and protection. Multiple studies have proven that plants keep you healthier and happier, offering both psychological and physical health benefits too. In addition to the health and wellbeing benefits, the garden spaces for the Property Industry Foundation projects are also required to be low maintenance, drought tolerant and easy for the caretakers and volunteers to manage. Finding that balance is the key to good garden design.

What landscaping direction do you offer Haven Houses in terms of garden maintenance?

In addition to providing a suitable plant palette and planting advice, the Plantmark team are happy to volunteer their time to provide ‘hands-on’ assistance and guidance with maintaining the existing plants and trees and overseeing the simple seasonal gardening projects with the other volunteer members.

With rising numbers of homeless being young (aged 12-18), we are proud to be part of a solution that helps breaks the cycle and provide better opportunities and outcomes for their future.
