Haven House South Dowling Model

We talked to Leanne Mills, Aurecon Executive Assistant, NSW & ACT Buildings, about their commitment to showing up for vulnerable young people.

Why did Aurecon Group want to be involved in Haven House South Dowling?

We saw a chance to be part of something that has a lasting, tangible impact on young lives. For us, it’s not just about sponsorship, it’s also about showing up for the communities in which we live and work. The Property Industry Foundation’s research shows that providing a safe and stable place to live is so important for young people facing disadvantage, and this project presented a meaningful opportunity to do just that.

How did this project align with your organisation’s values?

Aurecon and its people embrace the philosophy of giving back to the community by encouraging proactive involvement in corporate social investment initiatives and voluntary programs. By supporting this initiative, we’re not only providing shelter, but we’re helping build a foundation for education, employment and wellbeing.

How do you think this development will impact homeless youth in the area?

It will give young people the breathing space to rebuild their lives, supported by professionals who genuinely care. It’s a step toward addressing homelessness in inner Sydney by giving individuals the structure and opportunity to move forward, by helping young people build confidence, learn essential skills and connect with education or employment opportunities. Haven House South Dowling will create momentum that can lead to long-term change – not just for the individuals living there, but for the community.

What did you feel was unique and valuable about the project?

What made this project stand out is the intentional design – both in the physical space and the support model. It’s more than accommodation. It’s a thoughtfully created environment that balances security, independence and community. There’s a long-term vision, to not only provide accommodation for at-risk young people, but to equip them with what they need for their next chapter.

Without support, housing alone isn’t enough to make a transformative, long-term impact. Many at-risk young people require more than a key, where community, and encouragement is just as beneficial. This support from the Property Industry Foundation is helping young people take steps toward independence with the tools and confidence to sustain it.

How does the South Dowling project demonstrate the impact of collaboration within the industry?

This project is an example that when the industry comes together, we can collectively work to solve complex social challenges – not just infrastructure ones. It’s a powerful reminder that collaboration can build more than just structures.

How else is Aurecon Group supporting the Property Industry Foundation?

Our collaboration with the Property Industry Foundation spans two decades with involvement in the Future Leaders Committee, Construction Rocks, and many hands-on volunteer days at the Foundation’s community partner facilities. Aurecon people are passionate about supporting the amazing work that the Foundation undertakes.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Aurecon is proud to contribute our support and expertise to the work that the Property Industry Foundation undertakes. The real achievement is the impact this development will have on the lives of at-risk young people who walk through its doors. We look forward to continuing our support of the Property Industry Foundation.
