48 teams and 242 industry champions took on the Melbourne Tour de PIF in Healesville on Friday 14 November, raising over $160,000 for homeless youth.
Victoria’s stunning Yarra Valley was the perfect backdrop for a day of community, connection and purpose as our Victorian supporters hit the road for a trio of challenging rides.
After months of training and fundraising, the first group of cyclists set out from RACV Healesville at 9am for the 70km, with the 55km and 30km riders following close behind. The hills, winding country roads and camaraderie made for an excellent hit out, with big smiles all round.
After the last rider crossed the finish line, it was time for a relaxed networking lunch, hosted by MC Matt Keenan – one of Australia’s most respected cycling commentators and voice of the Tour de France on SBS. Matt brought his trademark humour and passion for the sport and our cause to the day.
Matt was joined on the mic by a series of entertaining guest speakers, including pro cyclist and Melbournite Sarah Gigante, a rising star and one of the best climbers in the world, and Mitch Docker – a former World Tour rider turned commentator.
Guests also heard from Pete King, new Chair of the Victorian Board of Advisors and Dr James Aloni – Salvation Army’s State Manager Youth Services. James introduced Lorissa, a young person with a lived experience of homelessness, who talked candidly about the harsh realities of life without stable housing and the life-changing difference a safe space can make.
A raffle and auction prizes were up for grabs – hosted by legendary larrikin Stu Verrier, Head of Property Development and Asset Management from Melbourne Airport. Generosity on the day was outstanding as we set our sights on $200,000 for at risk young people.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Tour de PIF without some friendly competition and team rivalry!
