Over 215 industry riders traded desks for saddles to Pedal for Homeless Youth on Thursday 30 July in Brisbane’s Queen St Mall.
Riding in timed sessions, 23 companies from the property and construction industry joined us to test their fitness and fundraise for homeless building projects, which take young people off couches, streets and cars and into safe, supportive homes. Together, we raised over $60,000 through fundraising, ticket sales and sponsorship to help give vulnerable young people a warm bed, a roof over their head, and the fresh start they deserve.
This year’s event carries extra significance, marking the Property Industry Foundation’s 30th Anniversary. Contributions from Pedal are helping fund Haven Projects, including 53 bedrooms across three major projects here in Queensland.
“Every night, while many of us sleep soundly, thousands of young Queenslanders are homeless,” says Caitlin Cunningham, Events & Engagement Manager QLD, Property Industry Foundation. “These young people often face dangerous, uncertain conditions as they search for shelter. Thirty years on, events like Pedal remind us why this work matters as much as ever.”
Property Industry Foundation Head of Fundraising, Michal Cohen-Noble jumped on the lead bike to remind riders of the Foundation’s mission to increase the number of bedrooms available for homeless youth. “It’s super important that every young person in Australia has a safe and secure place to sleep,” says Michal. “A safe place to live lets a young person stop surviving day to day and start imagining a future of their own.”
Pumping tunes and a bit of healthy competition kept riders spinning through lung-burning sprints. “Pedal brings the industry together – not only for a bit of friendly competition and fun, but in a show of solidarity for positive change in the lives of homeless youth,” says Caitlin Cunningham, QLD Events & Engagement Manager. “Thank you to all who took part or donated.”
