From Crisis to Confidence
For many young people facing homelessness and complex life challenges, rebuilding stability takes time. The path forward is often shaped by setbacks, uncertainty, and the difficult work of learning to trust again. Through Haven House Dulwich Hill 1, operated by Stepping Stone House, young people like Sophie* are given more than a safe place to stay. They are provided with the support, guidance, and opportunities needed to build confidence, develop independence, and create a brighter future.
When Sophie first arrived at Haven House Dulwich Hill 1 as part of Stepping Stone House’s Intensive Therapeutic Care Program, she was experiencing significant challenges in many areas of her life. She was living with complex mental health concerns, had no connection to education or employment, was estranged from her family, and lacked trusted adults she could turn to for support. At the time, she was also struggling with alcohol and other drug use and had limited experience with many of the practical skills needed for independent living.
With the support of the Stepping Stone House team, Sophie began taking meaningful steps forward. She engaged with mental health services, completed her HSC equivalent studies, earned her White Card, and developed hundreds of practical living skills. Along the way, she built strong and trusting relationships with staff and embraced opportunities to participate in activities and experiences that helped broaden her confidence and sense of possibility.
Over time, Sophie’s confidence and independence increased, she successfully transitioned through Stepping Stone House’s Semi-Independent Living Program before moving into the Independent Living Program, each stage providing new opportunities to strengthen her skills and prepare for life beyond supported accommodation.

Today, Sophie lives independently in her own privately rented home. She is currently studying animal care, has rebuilt positive relationships with her family, and recently completed a traffic control course. While continuing her studies, she is actively seeking employment and working toward the next chapter of her life.
