A Pathway to Independence
For many young people experiencing homelessness, the journey toward stability is rarely straightforward. It can involve years of uncertainty, disrupted relationships, and trying to rebuild a sense of safety after long periods without it. Through Haven House Bonbeach, operated by Lighthouse Foundation, young people like Remi* are given more than just a place to stay. They are given the opportunity to reconnect, rebuild, and begin creating a future that feels possible again.
When Remi first moved into Haven House Bonbeach, she had been experiencing rough sleeping after a temporary accommodation arrangement unexpectedly ended. Like many young people facing homelessness, their situation was shaped by a combination of complex challenges, including long-term involvement with the child protection system and disconnection from much of their family support network.
Without stable housing, even everyday life becomes difficult. Simple things most people take for granted, like getting enough sleep, maintaining routines, staying connected to others, or planning for the future, become much harder. For Remi, finding a safe and stable home through Lighthouse Foundation marked the beginning of a major turning point in her life.
During her time at Haven House Bonbeach, Remi worked closely with Lighthouse staff, who provided her with support, guidance, and encouragement as she navigated the next stage of her life. Over time, they began rebuilding confidence and stability while also reconnecting with the people who mattered most to her.
One of the most meaningful parts of Remi’s journey was repairing relationships with her siblings after a long period of separation and instability. Slowly, those family connections began to strengthen again, helping Remi rebuild a sense of belonging and support that he had previously been missing from her life.
After around 18 months of support through Lighthouse, Remi took a major step toward independence by applying for and securing a private rental property. Today, they live independently alongside a family member, continuing to build a more stable and secure future.
While moving into independent housing marked an exciting milestone, Remi’s connection with Lighthouse hasn’t ended. She continues to stay in touch with the staff who supported her throughout their journey and occasionally returns to Haven House Bonbeach for dinner when they are in the area.
Those ongoing relationships speak to the lasting impact safe housing and support can have on a young person’s life. Beyond providing accommodation, Haven House Bonbeach helped create a sense of community, trust, and connection that continues long after a young person moves on.
