Getting to know the residents of our Haven Houses…
Aged just 16, Tom* accessed homelessness services after hours after being kicked out of home and sleeping rough outside a residential home for three nights. Vulnerable and scared, Tom admitted his dad was a meth addict and he’d been the target of both physical and emotional abuse for many months.
With no-where else to turn, Tom was referred to Haven House Werribee (The West Refuge) a 10-bedroom accommodation centre for Melbourne City Mission (MCM) in western Melbourne. An initial 6-night crisis stay was extended by four weeks to get Tom back on his feet. During his stay, Tom turned 17 and was able to access assistance with rent in advance and a bond.
”“Tom expressed that he had felt safe, supported, and understood by staff throughout his stay at Haven House Werribee. We wish him the very best for his future.”
Melbourne City Mission
A survivor in every sense, Tom refused to give up during his stay at Haven House Werribee. MCM staff liaised with his school to explain his circumstances, which led to more flexibility and understanding from the school community during Tom’s housing crisis. Showing tenacity and resilience, Tom continued to attend school in Footscray and show up for shifts at his casual employment.
With help from staff, Tom secured ongoing Centrelink benefits and a place in MCM’s Foyer program – up to 3 years of accommodation for young people over 16 who have experienced homelessness who are committed to education and independent living.
