Bawdens will sponsor a bedroom in one of the apartments in the Property Industry Foundation’s flagship Haven House South Dowling development, providing a safe place and support to a young person who desperately needs it.
Currently in development with the support of over 20+ construction and building partners, Haven House South Dowling will offer homeless youth in inner-city Sydney 9×2-bedroom apartments, 1×1-bedroom apartment, counselling and life skills spaces, and communal outdoor spaces. Frontline Partners, The Salvation Army will deliver specialist wraparound services designed to grow confidence, education and employment pathways, and life skills in the young residents.
“We are excited to support the Foundation in their development of Haven House South Dowling, based upon a number of beliefs we hold as a group,” says Barry Cawthorn, Bawdens Managing Director.
“The project particularly aligns with our core values of integrity, passion, leadership and trust.”
In 2023–24, Specialist Homelessness Service (SHS) agencies around Australia assisted around 38,600 young people presenting alone, the third largest SHS client group. NSW had the highest number of clients and most were not enrolled in formal education or training. Less than half received assistance with urgently required accommodation.
“Young people need to know they can trust society to help them when they need it,” says Barry. “That their relationship within and to the community is important to us. That diversity builds inclusion. The establishment of Haven House South Dowling is a way for us to help homeless and at-risk youth to feel safe, create steps towards a more secure future, and build self-confidence and self-belief. It provides a foundation for a healthy life through eating well, exercise and learning. Haven House South Dowling will be a place where young people can grow over time and discover trust in themselves and others.”
