Project Overview

Caretakers Cottage runs this property as a medium-term residence for young people in out of home care aged from 12 to 17 years old. Most are 16-17 in this residence.

This three-level house currently operate with five bedrooms on the top floor and staff areas operating from the lower ground floor. It has shared spaces and bathrooms.

Haven House Sylvania refurbishment focused on creating an extra two bedrooms and an additional full bathroom on the first floor.

As well as the reconfiguration of the staff areas to create an extra counselling room.

01 Construction Begins

Haven House Sylvania has begun a two-stage renovation

Haven House Sylvania has begun a two-stage renovation, transforming a dated 1960s property into a safe, bright home for children leaving Out of Home Care. Run by Caretakers Cottage and rebuilt by Building Partner Trinity Fitout & Construction, Phase 1 will add two extra bedrooms and a modern bathroom, while Phase 2 will reconfigure staff and living areas, including a new counselling room and a kitchen designed to teach young people everyday life skills. As Trinity’s Elizabeth De La Paz puts it, the renovation is about far more than a refurbished space, it’s about giving vulnerable teens the chance to experience safety, care and hope. 02 Working Bees

Companies across NSW lending a hand

Haven House Sylvania has had no shortage of helping hands this festive season. On 29 November, Plenary Group and Pariter’s Sydney office used their annual volunteer leave for painting and garden maintenance, while on 11 December, Charter Hall rolled up their sleeves for a working bee, painting rooms and setting up bedroom furniture as part of Phase 1 of the renovation. Run by Caretakers Cottage, the home provides specialised support and independent living skills for young adults ageing out of the Out of Home Care Sector, and has recently gained two extra bedrooms and a new bathroom, with more upgrades to staff areas planned for 2025. Charter Hall, recognised as a 2024 Property Industry Foundation Champion Company for their ongoing support, summed it up best: the Foundation gives the property and construction sector a genuine opportunity to engage with the causes closest to their values.

Henderson Advocacy Transforms a Shabby Space

Henderson Advocacy brought serious energy to a recent working bee at Haven House Sylvania, rolling up their sleeves to assemble desks, chairs, furniture and shelving, transforming the space into a warm, welcoming environment for young people in need. As NSW Corporate Partnerships Manager Jess Pollard puts it, days like this are about building more than just homes, they’re building hope and helping change lives for at-risk youth.

04 Teya’s Story

Getting to know the residents of our Haven Houses

When Teya* first arrived at Haven House Sylvania in early 2025, she was nervous about what living independently for the first time might feel like. Run by Caretakers Cottage, the shared residence offers young people ageing out of Out of Home Care specialised support and independent living skills alongside five housemates and dedicated caseworkers. Since settling in, Teya has found confidence and comfort in the home’s 2024 refurbishment, from the new bathroom and beautiful tiled hallways to the sensor lighting that eases her fear of the dark.

Getting to know the residents of our Haven Houses

05 House Opening

Eight new residents have moved into a transformed Haven House Sylvania, just in time for Christmas, thanks to a flurry of industry-led working bees late in 2024. Spearheaded by Building Partner Trinity Fitout & Construction, with pro bono project management and support from a large contingent of industry partners, the project expanded the Caretaker’s Cottage residence to eight bedrooms, complete with an additional bathroom, turning an outdated and cramped property into a bright, modern home for young people ageing out of the Out of Home Care Sector. As Trinity’s Ben Lloyd puts it, this was more than a renovation, it was a chance to give vulnerable teens the stability and hope they need to plan for a brighter future.
