Project Overview

The National Association for Women in Construction NSW (NAWIC NSW), McCormack, and the Property Industry Foundation have partnered to support young women aged 12-17 without a safe home in Sydney. Their female-led team will renovate the Girls Refuge, a 7-bedroom crisis house in Sydney’s inner west.

The Girls Refuge provides 3-6 months of trauma-informed support, including accommodation, counseling, education, and career guidance, for up to 200 young women annually. It is the only all-female crisis center in NSW.

Renovation plans include upgrading bathrooms, laundry, and bedrooms to ensure privacy and creating spaces for youth workers and crisis support. These improvements are critical to maintaining a safe, nurturing environment for young women in crisis.

Haven House Inner West marks a milestone as the Foundation’s first-ever women-only refuge, brought to life through a powerful collaboration between the Property Industry Foundation, NAWIC and the McCormack team. From McCormack’s commitment to gender equality and their trade partners’ invaluable support, to NAWIC’s mission of empowering women, and the Property Industry Foundation’s core purpose of supporting people experiencing homelessness. Beyond providing a safe, dedicated living space for young women in need, the project offers residents a unique window into the construction industry, with the hope of inspiring future careers. It’s a moving tribute to what’s possible when purpose-driven partners come together and a heartfelt thank you to everyone whose time, funds and generosity made it happen.
